We are Zelectric Motors.

Based in San Diego, California, we outfit midcentury classics to go the distance well into the 21st century.

The future is electric. But we've always loved our classic VWs and vintage euro-rides. And Tesla, the whole EV thing. So we thought: wouldn't it be cool: the juxtaposition of past/future. RetroFuture! Take that sweet German design and throw in a high performance electric powertrain. That would just blow us out of the water. Outrageous! We wanted that in our garage.

So we dove into it. We built up a network of seasoned experts, each specialists in their field - high performance EV engineering, VW restoration, and mechanics who know these vintage Beetles inside and out. As work began on our first Vdub, we named it ZelectricBug. With the help of social media, we've discovered that thousands of other people around the world are taken with this classic-electric concept too.

Talk about the high performance Zelectric package.

And the fact that everything listed will apply to all cars, Bugs and Euros. The point here is to position us as quite different from a basic conversion shop. We are all about performance, and the drive is the thing.

Our initial turnkey offering is the ZelectricBug™ – featuring the Zelectric powertrain and select upgrades built into restored VW Beetles (1958–1966.)  Zelectric Motors is not and never will be a factory assembly-line operation. Each Beetle is restored to a level of excellence before any work begins. By the nature of the business itself, production will always be limited to special editions, each somewhat unique.

Zelectric Motors is the brainchild of award-winning designer-producers David Benardo and Bonnie Rodgers, partners in life and business since 1986. Lifelong aficionados of the VW brand, they've owned and loved vintage microbuses, Karmann Ghias, and various 50s-60s Beetles.
